Lilly Pulitzer Dorm Coaster DIY

Hey y'all! I'm here to share a fun DIY post, as well as a bit of an update.

First with the life update: This fall (more like starting next week) I will be attending the University of Alabama as a freshman. Although I haven't been very active on my blog and instagram lately, I wanted to hop on here and share some of my advice and experiences.

As I have prepared for college, I have found so much advice online but there are still so many things to find out. Because of this I decided to start blogging again to share some things I learn. I plan to post DIYs, a sorority recruitment look book, random favorites, and travel experiences. If we're being honest though, I'm not quite sure how it'll go being a freshman in college :)

One thing I wanted to share was a tutorial on how to make these Lilly Pulitzer modge podge coasters. I knew I had seen them, but I could not find a tutorial on how to actually make them so I am here today to share that.

Here is what you will need:

Plain white tiles, modge podge, Lilly Pulitzer agenda and/or catalogs, foam brushes, gold paint, small paint brushes, cork board, low odor gloss sealant

The first thing I did was take gold paint and a tiny paint brush to paint the edges. This is totally optional but I think it made it look more finished. Don't worry about being too neat because the paint will be covered on top with the paper pieces.

Next, I traced the shape of the tile onto a piece of cork board and cut it out. I cut inside of the lines so it would be a little smaller than the tile. I used hot glue to attach it to the back. This will keep the coaster from sliding around.

Now for the fun part! Because of the small size of the coasters and need for straight edges I felt a bit overwhelmed and had no clue where to start. What I ended up doing was going through my old Lilly Pulitzer planners and picking out four of my favorite quotes from the beginning of the month pages. Then I picked one or two patterns for each coaster to match the colors of the quote.

I found that the monthly calendar had great pieces to use for the edges. Make sure when you're cutting out pieces that you leave some straight to go along the edges.

Once all of my pieces were ready, I used my modge podge and foam brush to adhere the quotes to the center of the tile. After that it was a free for all of fitting things together.  I just used a single coat of modge podge on the back of each paper and stuck it onto the coaster. I started at the corners and moved out from there. For the coasters that I used two prints for I tried to have a good mix between the two throughout.

Here is my southern charm and flamingo coaster in progress. I really tried hard not to worry about making it look too perfect because you can always cover up your mistakes with another piece. Try to vary the shapes and sizes of the pieces you use.

And then you just repeat the process until the tiles are fully covered. Once the coasters were fully covered, I waited 15 minutes for everything to set and then covered the whole thing in modge podge. Make sure you cover the edges as well so there are no pieces sticking off of the side. Then wait 15 minutes, repeat, wait another 15 minutes, and repeat again. Once the third coat is dry, apply sealant to the top. This will protect the coasters from water and other things.

Here is my finished product. I absolutely love how they turned out and can't wait to use them in my dorm room! Thanks for stopping by.

Friday Favorites: A Taste of Spring

Happy Friday! To be honest I'm not too happy it's Friday because I have been on vacation all week and this just means I am closer to getting back to reality. I still have some fun favorites for you today though!
I am linked with Andrea, Erika , and Narci.

Favorite number 1: Washington DC
My recent trip to Washington DC has me reminiscing big time about being in the city. The weather was also beautiful and has me dreaming of Spring. It is one of my favorite places ever and if you haven't been, you need to get there! Spring is a great time to visit because the weather is perfect and the cherry blossoms everywhere are gorgeous. If you are visiting, some of my favorite things to do are visit the Smithsonian Museums (American History is my favorite), the National Zoo, walk around all of the monuments, the National Cathedral, and attending events on the Mall.

Favorite number 2: Spring Weather
The weather where I live has been beautiful as well and I have been soaking it in. Nothing is better than a 60 degree and sunny February day in a state where it should be 20 and snowing in February :) I have also loved dressing for the Spring weather.

Shirt: similar , similar

Jacket: Similar, I love mine for transition weather
Purse: Longchamp (I have the navy tote in a small)
Shoes: Lace up flats
Shirt: mine is from Loft but I couldn't find anything similar

Favorite number 3: Crafting
Since I have been on vacation this week, I have enjoyed digging into my craft box. Here are some of the things I have made in the past or recently made.

I really enjoy making hair accessories. I have felt bows, ribbon bows, flowers made of fabric and ribbon, headbands, and many more. These are all available for sale as well. If you are interested in purchasing one or have any questions, please email me at dashofpreppy@gmail.com I think the flowers and bright colors are perfect for Spring!
Favorite number 4: SheIn Clothing
This is one of my favorite sites to shop for trendy clothes. The prices are great, so it makes it nice to be able to test out new trends without spending a ton of money. Here are some of my current favorite pieces that scream Spring to me!

A Weekend in Washington DC

Hey everyone, it's been awhile but I have an exciting post for you today!

This past weekend I travelled to Washington DC to visit family and I wanted to share some pictures with you from my trip.
 Here are my bags.
I brought my Lilly Pulitzer tote bag (similar to this one), North Face backpack (similar), First Impressions makeup bag, and suit case of course!

I wore army green leggings, a striped cowl neck sweater, booties, and my fuzzy coat on the plane.  Also, I absolutely adore my Lilly Pulitzer lemons luggage tag.

On Friday, after I arrived, we mostly hung out around the house. For dinner, my cousin and I walked to a yummy firestone pizza restaurant called Lena's. We had a New England Clam Pizza. The weather was a little chiller that night, but the restaurant had outdoor heaters and blankets and many people eating on the patio.

Here is my outfit from Saturday. It was gorgeous outside and around 70 degrees. I didn't last very long wearing my coat!

The first thing we did was walk around King Street in Downtown Alexandira. There are so many cute stores, I could have spent all day there!
Of course I had to stop by the Pink Palm. Everyone there was so friendly and I love the things in stores currently. I tried on the girls Jaci Dress because I like the style a little more than the adult, but unfortunately I think it was a little too short on me.

Next, we went to an escape room at a place in Alexandria called Escape Quest. The success rate on the room we did was only 30%, but we successfully found the treasure and it was a lot of fun!

After exploring Alexandria, we headed into Georgetown. We walked onto an old aqueduct that had a gorgeous view of the river.

Of course I had to go to Georgetown Cupcakes! The line went back the entire block but it moved quickly, especially since it was so beautiful outside.

They had so many amazing choices it was hard to pick one. I tried the red velvet cheesecake, chocolate lava cake, and peanut butter fudge. It is hard to explain how amazing they all were, by far the best cupcakes I have ever tasted. They have the perfect consistency and an amazing flavor, but not too sweet!
Georgetown has a gorgeous water front and was packed full of people and entertainment on Saturday. Here is a view of the Kennedy Center and Watergate Building.

On the way back, we drove around looking at memorials and monuments. The last time I saw them all was at night, so it was really fun to see them in the daylight. Here is the Washington Monument and World War 1 Memorial.

On Sunday morning I went to an indoor cycling class at my cousins gym and this is what I wore. These are my favorite workout leggings ever. They're from Old Navy and so is my shirt. I love their active wear line. Cycling was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but definitely a good workout.

After the gym, I changed into this adorable shirt. It was another beautiful day in the city. I don't have many pictures, but we ate lunch at a famous Chinese restaurant called Peking Gourmet Inn. Many presidents have eaten there and the walls are lined with photos of famous people and service members. The food was amazing. After lunch, I spent some more time walking around and shopping in Old Town.

My favorite part about flying in or out of DC are the views. It is so cool seeing so many monuments from up above. Here is the Jefferson Monument and beautiful sunset I saw for most of my flight.

I hope you enjoyed and had a nice Presidents Day weekend!
